Goodreads Description:
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed.  In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire -- that is, if she makes it through the Change.  Not all of those who are chosen do.  It's tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling.  She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.  But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers.  When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

Review:

I started reading "Marked" (Romanian edition) when it was published as a mass-market paperback along with a magazine for teens. I wanted to read when it was first published in Romania, but was afraid to engage in another paranormal series. But since this paperback was cheap and all... I said to myself: "Why not?".
The thing is... there are many many reviews on Goodreads from haters of the series, and I can see their points, but... it was not that bad.
Actually, "Marked" has a few unique ideas and I think some of these would look awesome in a movie (I hear that last year the film rights were aquired by David Films).
The book is a typical young adult paranormal. It deals with teens' problems like drugs, sex, alcohol, bullies and so on.
As a vampire-themed book, it is somewhere in between Vampire Academy, True Blood and Twilight. It can't be helped, as vampires have been used and re-used by so many authors that there are hardly any things about them that are not found in a series or another. However, as I wrote above, there are a few ideas that, personally, I haven't found in other books... or at least, not in this form. The first of them is the saphire-like moon "Mark" that any vampire is given on their forehead, and that, as they mature, grows into unique drawings. Vampirism is treated like a genetic mutation that can appear to anyone during their adolescence. Additionally, these teens that have been Marked have to go to the House of Night to be trained and schooled, and not all of them will survive the transition. Then we have Nyx, the goddes whom vampires worship and that, of course, has chosen the main character, Zoey, as her special Priestess.
The book was, at times, very slow, but very interesting towards the ending. It is actually a very quick-read and I finished it in 2 days. Although it wasn't worth more than 3 out of 5 vanilla flowers, I will buy the next novels out of curiousity, provided they are also published in the form of cheap mass-market paperbacks. If not, maybe I will borrow them from my friends (two of them have the novels).
