Endgame – Jocul final. Convocarea

31 octombrie 0 Comments

Editura Trei lansează prima experienţă multimedia integrată carte-joc:
Endgame – Jocul final. Convocarea

- James Frey & Nils Johnson-Shelton

Jocul Final e real. Jocul Final a început.

Say NO To E-book Piracy: Kelley Armstrong's View

28 octombrie 0 Comments
no-pirace-banner2

Last year, I talked to you a little about pirating ebooks. The subject was merely touched, however, as I only mentioned do's and dont's when it comes to ebooks that you have bought. I have never showed you an author's perspective, even though I was planning to. I'm taking the liberty of quoting Kelley Armstrong on one of her tumblr posts answering to a question.

My priority is being read. Buy the hardcover. Buy the paperback. Buy the ebook. Buy it from a used book store. Borrow it from a library. Borrow it from a friend. It’s all good.
Now, that being said, while it’s lovely to say “I just want to be read,” I kinda need to get paid. Otherwise, I have to go back to a day job, which means I could probably write a book every other year, instead of 2.5 a year.
I get royalties from every book sold: hardcover, paperback, ebook. First run, second run, it doesn’t matter. I get paid. I won’t get into which gives me more because I want readers to buy whichever one suits them and not worry about that. I’m making a living at this, so I’m happy :)
Buying used or borrowing from a friend means I get nothing…except a potential new reader. My hope, then, is that if someone is borrowing or buying used, at some point, they’ll start buying new. Or maybe they’ll recommend my books to friends who’ll buy them.
Now, when I say I’m fine with borrowed books, I don’t mean pirated ebooks. Sorry. Here’s where I draw the line. I have to, because I like my job and I’d kinda like to keep doing it ;) What’s the difference between borrowing from a library/friend and downloading a pirated copy? The library must purchase copies, which only last a limited time (both ebook and physical) The friend must buy the physical copy, which will wear out if he/she lends it too often. That reduces the ratio of purchases to readers. In piracy, one copy can be lent countless times.
The problem there is sales—not just for me but for my publisher. The publisher judges the success of a series based on sales (including to libraries) A series may have a massive readership via piracy, but that doesn’t matter to the publisher. To them, dropping sales = failing series. Or. in the case of a new series, low sales = failed series. Rack up enough falling series or failed series and that’s the end of the line for an author. The bottom line there is: if you like an author, please, please, please don’t read his/her work pirated. Support him/her by buying or borrowing from a legit source.

Thoughts on "Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops"

23 octombrie 3 Comments

Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops

by Jen Campbell

This Sunday Times Bestseller is a miscellany of hilarious and peculiar bookshop moments:
'Can books conduct electricity?'
'My children are just climbing your bookshelves: that's ok... isn't it?'
A John Cleese Twitter question ['What is your pet peeve?'], first sparked the 'Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops' blog, which grew over three years into one bookseller's collection of ridiculous conversations on the shop floor.
From 'Did Beatrix Potter ever write a book about dinosaurs?' to the hunt for a paperback which could forecast the next year's weather; and from 'I've forgotten my glasses, please read me the first chapter' to'Excuse me... is this book edible?'
This full-length collection illustrated by the Brothers McLeod also includes top 'Weird Things' from bookshops around the world.

Well this was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. There are some pretty weird... and dumb people out there and it is only natural they find their way into bookshops one way or another. Some for the silliest reasons.

“CUSTOMER: If I were to, say... meet the love of my life in this bookshop, what section do you think they would be standing in?”

So I take it's a pretty interesting life being a bookseller. Maybe it's annoying when they all come in and put stupid questions, but at the end of the day, it's pretty hilarious for those you tell about it... and later for you too.

I'm really happy some effort was put into creating this collection of bookshopping weirdness. :)

“CUSTOMER: Oh, look, these books are all signed. (Pause) I wonder who signed them ?”

“CUSTOMER: Hi, I just wanted to ask: did Anne Frank ever write a sequel?
BOOKSELLER: ........
CUSTOMER: I really enjoyed her first book.
BOOKSELLER: Her diary?
CUSTOMER: Yes, the diary.
BOOKSELLER: Her diary wasn’t fictional.
CUSTOMER: Really?
BOOKSELLER: Yes... She really dies at the end – that’s why the diary finishes. She was taken to a concentration camp.
CUSTOMER: Oh... that’s terrible.
BOOKSELLER: Yes, it was awful -
CUSTOMER: I mean, it’s such a shame, you know? She was such a good writer.”

“CUSTOMER: I read a book in the sixties. I don’t remember the author, or the title. But it was green, and it made me laugh. Do you know which one I mean?”

“CUSTOMER: I’m always on night shift at work.
BOOKSELLER (jokingly): Is that why you’re buying so many vampire novels?
CUSTOMER (seriously): You can never be too prepared.”

“CUSTOMER: I don’t know why she wants it, but my wife asked for a copy of The Dinosaur Cookbook.
BOOKSELLER: The Dinah Shore Cookbook?”

“CUSTOMER: Hi.
BOOKSELLER: Hi there, how can I help?
CUSTOMER: Could you please explain Kindle to me.
BOOKSELLER: Sure. It’s an e-reader, which means you download books and read them on a small hand-held computer.
CUSTOMER: Oh OK, I see. So . . . this Kindle. Are the books on that paperback or hardback?”

“MAN: Do you have black and white film posters?
BOOKSELLER: Yes, we do. They’re over here.
MAN: Do you have any posters of Adolf Hitler?
BOOKSELLER: Pardon?
MAN: Adolf Hitler.
BOOKSELLER: Well, he wasn’t a film star, was he.
MAN: Yes, he was. He was American. Jewish, I think...”

“CUSTOMER: Which was the first Harry Potter book?
BOOKSELLER: The Philosopher’s Stone.
CUSTOMER: And the second?
BOOKSELLER: The Chamber of Secrets.
CUSTOMER: I’l take The Chamber of Secrets. I don’t want The Philosopher’s Stone.
BOOKSELLER: Have you already read that one?
CUSTOMER: No, but with series of books I always find they take a while to really get going. I don’t want to waste my time with the useless introductory stuff at the beginning.
BOOKSELLER: The story in Harry Potter actually starts right away. Personally, I do recommend that you start with the first book – and it’s very good.
CUSTOMER: Are you working on commission?
BOOKSELLER: No.
CUSTOMER: Right. How many books are there in total?
BOOKSELLER: Seven.
CUSTOMER: Exactly. I’m not going to waste my money on the first book when there are so many others to buy. I’l take the second one.
BOOKSELLER: . . . If you’re sure.
(One week later, the customer returns)
BOOKSELLER: Hi, did you want to buy a copy of The Prisoner of Azkaban?
CUSTOMER: What’s that?
BOOKSELLER: It’s the book after The Chamber of Secrets.
CUSTOMER: Oh, no, definitely not. I found that book far too confusing. I ask you, how on earth are children supposed to understand it if I can’t? I mean, who the heck is that Voldemort guy anyway? No. I’m not going to bother with the rest.
BOOKSELLER: . . .”

“WOMAN: Hi, where are your copies of Breaking Dawn? I can't see any on the shelf.
BOOKSELLER: Sorry, I think we’ve sold out of the Twilight books; we’re waiting on more.
WOMAN: What?
BOOKSELLER: We should have some in tomorrow.
WOMAN: But I need a copy now. I finished the last one last night.
BOOKSELLER: I’m sorry, I can’t help you.
WOMAN: No, you don’t understand. I’ve taken the whole day off work to read it.
BOOKSELLER: Erm…
WOMAN: I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! NOW!
BOOKSELLER: Erm…
WOMAN: Can you call your wholesaler and see if they can deliver this afternoon?
BOOKSELLER: They only ---
WOMAN: And then I can wait here for them.
BOOKSELLER: I’m sorry, they only deliver in the morning.
WOMAN: BUT WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?
BOOKSELLER: . . .we have many other books.
WOMAN (sniffs): Do any of those have Robert Pattinson in them?”

my rating

vanilla-rating-4-stars

my review

I've never watched this TV series, nor do I collect the oh-so-adorable toys (though I've seen them around stores in Romania and was often tempted to pick one up and make my book shelves look cuter). However, I've always been curious as to what this is all about, so when I saw this graphic novel pop up in NetGalley's available titles to read now, I just had to click that button.

Blythe Baxter is a teenage girl working at the Littlest Pet Shop and guess what? She can talk to animals. While this is nowhere near a new concept (Dr. Dolittle anyone?), I found the book to be cute and enjoyable.

It contains a lot of short stories which are quite fun to read, even for those who are unfamiliar to the show (as I am) and it's probably even better for the fans. I think this would be a great way to have your child interested in reading, since comics can give them an appetite for this kind of activities.

In terms of graphics, a little research after reading it shows it is almost identical to the one in the show (a few stories though seem to have been illustrated by another person and have a somewhat different style of drawing).

Now that I got to know what the Littlest Pet Shop is all about, I'm sure to check out the animated series too, since I already am a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Both are developed by Hasbro in case you were not aware.
