Review/Recenzie: The Revenge of Praying Mantis (Hattori Hachi #1)

When I first read the description of "The Revenge of the Praying Mantis" by Jane Prowse, I thought the book would be a fun read and I added on my "to read" list. Soon after that, Jane announced me that her book is free to download on the series' site, and I jumped at the opportunity. Little did I know then how great the book would be, or that, in the next morning, I would win the second novel through Goodreads giveaways. As soon as I finished the book that I had been reading then, I started this first novel of Hattori Hachi's adventures and I was immediately hooked by the action.

I absolutely LOVE Asia, especially Japan, so I was thrilled to learn that Hattie, the protagonist, was half Japanese, and a big part of the book is based on Japanese culture and history. She could be a teenage girl like any other, but not with her mother secretly training her to be a ninja, testing how much she can hold her breath underwater, making her walk on thin surfaces at big heights and so on. But this so-called "little game" of theirs gets dangerous when her mother, Chiyoko, suddenly dissappears, and Hattie has to find out what happened to her, and figure out how to save her. She will discover who she and her mother really are, and learn how to be a ninja and fight, before the Kataki, lead by the Praying Mantis find and destroy her.

Hattie/Hachi was my favourite character, and not because she is the main one. I found her to be a very strong girl, despite her age, and her personality is  credible. She has moments when she is scared, and lost, like any child would be in that situation, but she is trying to overcome her fear and do what is best to save her mother. She is very loyal to her friends, and expects them to act the same.

Yazuki is a very interesting character too. Pretending to be just an old laundry lady, she is in fact the person who will train Hachi in ninjutsu. She is a true master of disguise, and will teach Hachi very valuable lessons, which can aply in both ninja and normal life. Some of these are widely known, some you will read for the first time...

"Anything can be a weapon in imaginative hands."

"When all else fails, when you hit a brick wall, let the enemy reveal themselves by giving them what they're looking for."

"Knowing when to leave requires training."

An idea that especially intrigues me is that anyone has an animus, a spirit that defines one as a person. '"But it can also mean “animosity” which is why the animal shadows only usually come out in confrontational situations. For centuries, Ninja have looked to the earth for inspiration in ways to live and fight. This is why you see us all giving off animal shadows. We each study the species that mean most to us. We each have an “Animus” that is unique...'"

But strength is not what matters in the ninja world. You can be a weak fighter and defeat your enemy if you are smart enough.

"Think about Praying Mantis. The deadliest ninja predator. Why isn't his animus a lion or a polar bear - two of the most successful killing machines in the animal kingdom? The answer is that these animals would not be right for him. Think how a praying mantis is invisible on a leaf, how they are carnivores who will devour their own species. The female will even eat her own partner once they've mated and, as hatchlings, their first meal is often one of their own siblings. These are the things that matter to Praying Mantis - and if you study his attributes, they are elements that will help you defeat him."

But don't think this book was all about fighting and life lessons! It's also a book about friendship, altruism, family and trust. Mad Dog is a character that will spice things up a little during Hachi's training. He is an orphan boy wrongly believed to have been involved in Chiyoko's dissappearence, and who is hiding in Yazuki's dojo and training to be a ninja too. Despite being not as skilled as Hachi, and having lots of invisible barriers to overcome, such as his fear of water and rats, he is determined to protect her at all cost. There's even a little bit of romance between them at the end, which makes me very curious how things will develop in the next novels.

All in all, I recommend this book to all of my reading friends, young adult lovers or not. You will find this book to be a little atypical for the YA genre, and in a good way.

P.S.: The book can be downloaded for free, on the series' site, here.
